UNSIGNED (19th Century) PORTRAIT OF THE BARQUE “CHARLES STEWART”. Gouache on paper portrait of the black hulled three-mast ship sailing left to right entering Palermo. In full sail flying the American flag and ship pennant with a white flag having red “S”. A harbor scene is shown with white lighthouse and mountain background. Nine figures on deck, one at steering wheel, another on deck roof with spyglass. Bottom with a hand painted legend “Barque Charles Stewart” Capt’n H.R. Powers Entering Palermo 17th January 1878″. Housed in what appears to be its original carved walnut frame with gold liner. SIZE: 19-3/4″ x 28″. PROVENANCE: Richard Paine Estate, Seal Cove, Maine. CONDITION: Generally very good, vertical foxing line in center and right side and some brown spotting. 9-92441 (1,000-2,000)
