SOLON FRANCIS MONTECELLO BADGER (American, 1873-1919) PORTRAIT OF THE SHIP “WILLARD MUDGETT”. Outstanding oil on canvas portrait of the black hulled three-mast ship flying American flag off back mast, red company flag with white “G”. Ship name on bow and stern. The white deck has thirteen figures and the ship is seen in full sail. It sails right to left passing a point of land with large white lighthouse with outbuildings and white cliffs under a mostly blue sky with scattered clouds. Signed lower left “SFM Badger 99”. Housed in what appears to be its original gesso decorated gilt frame. Back of canvas signed “SFM Badger Cha’s’n Mass”. SIZE: 21″ x 31″. PROVENANCE: Richard Paine Estate, Seal Cove, Maine.
