Incredible little carbine with 15″ tapered rnd bbl, square base front sight with German silver front blade & carbine ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this as a carbine in caliber 44 with a bbl length of 15″ shipped, Oct. 28, 1896 to Order #20667. The letter, quite unusually, also indicates that this is “The Baby”. Additionally accompanied by a 3-page letter from George Madis, noted Winchester historian & author, who fully authenticates this carbine as found. There are also two other letters from George Madis to the late John Wallace of New York, the apparent owner of this carbine in the year 2000. Additionally there is a 2-page letter from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms authenticating this carbine, as found, and exempting it from the provisions of the National Firearms Act, and further stating that it is an antique. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl retains a mottled dark brown patina from the rear sight forward, worn to gray metal finish around & behind the rear sight. Receiver retains a dark plum/blue patina with traces of silvered case colors around the saddle ring stud. Lever, hammer, breech block & buttplate are a plummy brown patina. Wood is sound with light handling & use marks showing moderate to heavy wear and retains most of a light added finish. Mechanics are crisp, strong bright bore with scattered light pitting. 4-40839 JR227 (9,000-12,000)
