SCARCE WHITNEY-PHOENIX SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. SN 1136. Cal. Appears to be 44 WCF (44-40). Standard grade rifle with 30-1/4″ medium weight oct bbl with dovetailed front sight with German silver blade, a tiny 2-position rear sight as observed on some Civil War carbines. Top flat of bbl is marked “PATENT MAY 26.74 PHOENIX.CAL.44”. The action is unique among American sporting arms with a side swinging breech block that when fully opened activates the extractor. Top tang is marked with the same patent date as the bbl. Mounted with nicely figured uncheckered American walnut with steel forend tip & straight stock with crescent steel buttplate. Forearm does have some crosshatch incised lines around tip. CONDITION: Very good. No orig finish remains being a smooth, even, medium gray/brown patina overall, somewhat lighter on the receiver, top tang & trigger guard. Wood is sound with light nicks & scratches and retains a hand worn patina. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-40467 JR341 (1,500-2,000)
