AMERICAN EMPIRE GRAIN-PAINTED DOLL’S CHEST OF DRAWERS. Mid 19th Century. Belfast, Maine. This charming example with rectangular deck top fitted with a pair of aligned short drawers, stepped back on the conforming case, fitted with an OG molded drawer above three long drawers flanked by serpentine pilasters ending in rolled feet. NOTE: A typed paper found within the chest outlines the family history. “This is one of three bureaus made by Mathews Bros. Mill for the three daughters of Spencer Mathews (Clara, Belle, and Cora). Clara Mathews Morison was the grandmother of Rebecca Holmes Hazeltine. The other doll’s bureaus made at the mill are owned by her sister Avis Holmes Howells and brother Clyde B. Holmes. 1878 Spencer and Sanford Mathews founded the Mathews Brothers mill in Belfast, Maine”. SIZE: Overall 20-3/4″ h x 18-3/8″ w x 9-7/8″ d. PROVENANCE: From a fine Belfast, Maine home.
