MAYNARD IMPROVED HUNTING & TARGET NO. 4 SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. SN 1547. Cal. Appears to be 32-35 Stevens & Maynard. Blue & nickel finish with 26″ oct to rnd bbl, gold washed Beech’s combination front sight and no provision for a rear sight. Receiver, top & bottom tangs are nickel finish and receiver has usual markings on left side. The top tang is mounted with an orig Maynard vernier tang sight with 3-1/2″ staff. Mounted with an unusual, highly figured, uncheckered American walnut pistol grip stock with high comb and a raised tapered rib that extends from below & behind the pistol grip in an arc up to the top tang near the receiver on each side. Buttstock has a lead slug in a hole under the buttplate which has oxidized and cracked the left side forward about 3″ from the butt. Buttplate is Swiss style, nickeled brass with medium prongs. Forearm is orig from Maynard with schnable tip, checkered side panels and a diamond around the screw escutcheon. SN was observed on the bottom tang and bottom of bbl. Stock with its crack by the lead slug hole is otherwise sound with light handling & use nicks & scratches and retains most of its fine varnish finish that is slightly crazed. Forearm has two repaired cracks by bbl channel and a small open crack on bottom rear edge and shows moderate to heavy wear, missing a sliver from top right rear edge and retaining about 50% orig finish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-40470 JR223 (3,000-4,000)
