*RARE STEVENS-POPE IDEAL MODEL 52 SCHUETZEN JUNIOR SINGLE SHOT TARGET RIFLE. SN 11373. Cal. 22. Spectacular Pope barreled Model 52 on a 44-1/2 action with 30″ medium weight oct bbl, windgage globe front sight and no provision for a rear sight. Top flat of bbl is marked “STEVENS-POPE / MANUFACTURED BY THE J STEVENS ARMS & TOOL CO. CHICOPEE FALLS. MASS. U.S.A.”. Bottom flat of bbl under forearm is stamped with a large number “329” and smaller number “1963”. The bore, which was probably a 32-40 or 38-55, has been sleeved to caliber 22 with conventional rifling. Receiver is color case hardened with large panels of foliate arabesque pattern engraving on each side and behind the hammer, with geometric patterns on top flat. All surrounded by simple line border engraving. Top tang is mounted with a tang sight that has a 3″ short-range windage vernier staff and it is fitted with Schuetzen dbl-set triggers and a large Pope finger rest Schuetzen lever. Mounted with very nicely figured, checkered American walnut with Stevens perch belly schnable tip forearm and checkered pistol grip with serpentine grip cap and perch belly buttstock with high comb and Schuetzen cheek piece with case colored steel Schuetzen buttplate. Bottom tang is marked with the model number & serial number, which number was also observed on the rear end of the buttstock under the buttplate and inside buttplate. Last three digits of SN are on rear face of forearm. Bbl is unnumbered. Altogether a very beautiful & desirable, shootable Stevens Schuetzen rifle. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl retains 95-96% strong orig blue with slight edge wear and a few minor scattered small spots of surface rust. Receiver retains about all of its moderately faded orig case colors. Lever retains case colors in sheltered areas, turned silver elsewhere. Wood is sound with a nick in the tip of the forearm and light handling & storage marks elsewhere and retains virtually all of its orig factory varnish. Buttplate retains traces of case colors faded & turning dark. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-40658 JR244 (5,000-8,000)
