SCARCE SHARPS MODEL 1878 PANEL BORCHARDT LONG RANGE TARGET RIFLE. SN 20871. Cal. Appears to be 45-70 but may be 45-100 Sharps. Usual configuration with 30″ medium weight tapered rnd bbl, spirit level windgage front sight, slot blank in rear seat and an integral tang sight base with a 4″ staff with vernier adjustment. Bbl retains no markings on top but has matching SN on bottom. Mounted with very nicely figured, streaky English walnut with straight checkered forearm with ebony forend tip and secured with a sgl wedge through dog bone shaped steel escutcheons. Butt stock has a long, checkered wrist with flat-topped, oval hard rubber grip cap and Sharps Rifle Co. hard rubber buttplate. Heel of the stock has had the heel sight base removed and cleverly plugged with a hand-fitted walnut panel. Receiver is mounted with hard rubber panels and the trigger & trigger lock are checkered. Bbl has matching number and the forearm & wedge have the last two digits of the SN. Buttstock could not be removed to check for additional matching numbers. According to Sharps Firearms, Sellers, only 230 of these fine rifles were produced in the period Oct. 1877 to May 1880. CONDITION: Fine to very fine, matching however buttstock could not be removed to check for additional matching numbers. Overall retains about all of an extremely fine professionally restored finish with strong bright blue on bbl and orig style strong but subtle case colors on receiver. Stock & forearm are sound with light handling & storage nicks & scratches and a couple of small bruises on buttstock and overall retain strong restored varnish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore with some light orange peel pitting just in front of chamber. 4-40133 JR205 (5,500-8,500)
