IMPORTANT MAINE SHERATON STENCIL DECORATED DRESSING TABLE. Second quarter mid-19th Century. Stencil decorated by Mr. George Lord, Portland, Maine. This nice grained and stenciled example with shaped back and rolled ears stencil decorated with grape vines. The raised deck with two aligned short drawers above the rectangular table top with rounded edges stenciled with leaf tips above the conforming frieze fitted with a single long drawer, drawer and frieze with mustard yellow lined decoration raised on tapering cylindrical turned legs continuing to ball feet. The whole with simulated rosewood graining. SIZE: 36″ h x 31″ l x 15-1/4″ d. PROVENANCE: The dressing table illustrated in “The Decorator” Journal of the Esther Stevens Brazer Guild and Historical Society of Early American Decoration, November 1947, on page 19 an article titled “A Day With Mr. George Lord-Old Time Decorator” 1833-1928 by Evelyn M. Holmes and illustrated on page 18. CONDITION: Structurally very good with the tops with areas of wear and light staining. Otherwise overall very good 9-24882 (700-900)
