EARLY CONVERSION MEDIUM WEIGHT SHARPS SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. SN 157152. Cal. 45 2-7/8″. Fine buffalo rifle with 30″ medium weight oct bbl, dovetail front sight with homemade German silver blade and fixed semi-buckhorn rear sight in the rear seat, replacing the Lawrence Patent ladder sight. Top flat of bbl forward of rear sight has the Hartford address and the caliber marking is over the chamber area. Receiver is from a carbine with sling bar still on left side. Mounted with straight grain uncheckered American walnut with typical round Sharps forearm and straight stock from an 1859 carbine with inlet for the sling bar base and a 2-pc Model 1859 style steel patchbox on right side. SN was observed on the top tang with bottom of bbl numbered “1S56129”. The inside channel of the forearm numbered “156129” with the number “36” on the front face of the buttstock and inside toe of buttplate. Trigger plate is unnumbered and the lockplate is numbered “1152”. Weight: 11 lbs. 9.28 oz. This is obviously a rifle assembled by one of the companies such as Meacham,or any number of others who purchased surplus parts and converted them into frontier buffalo & hunting rifles. CONDITION: Good to very good. Bbl retains a deep chocolate brown attic patina with a few scattered spots of light rust and sharp edges. Receiver retains traces of silvered case colors being mostly a dark brown patina. Lockplate, hammer & trigger plate retain traces of silvered case colors, also being a dark brown patina. Buttplate is also a dark brown patina with light pitting and spots of surface rust. Buttstock has a number of grain checks, otherwise the wood is sound showing heavy wear, especially on forearm which shows heavy saddle bow wear. Hammer is missing safety notch, otherwise mechanics are fine, strong bore with moderate pitting. 4-40664 JR213 (3,500-5,500)
