SHARPS MODEL 1874 HUNTER’S RIFLE. SN 155356. Cal. 40-70 Sharps Straight. Standard hunter’s rifle with 28″ round bbl, Sharps front sight with German silver blade, Lawrence patent ladder rear sight and a modern reproduction, color case-hardened sporting tang sight. Top of the bbl, forward of the rear sight has the Hartford address and the caliber marking is over the chamber area. It is mounted with straight grain, uncheckered American walnut with rounded forearm that has a simple rounded tip and straight stock with Sharps military-style smooth steel buttplate. Serial number was observed on the top tang in the normal position and on the bottom of the bbl. Lock plate is un-numbered and the trigger plate bears the serial number “7806”, which number is also found on the front face of the buttstock and inside the toe of the buttplate. Forearm is numbered “7507” in the bbl channel. According to Sharps Firearms,Sellers, there were only 141 of the hunter’s rifles produced at Hartford in the period 1875 until the company moved to Bridgeport. PROVENANCE: Bruce M. Cady Estate Collection. CONDITION: Good to Very Good. Bbl retains mostly a plum-brown patina with scattered light to moderate pitting about mid-point, which areas have been lightly cleaned. Receiver retains 20-25% case colors in the sheltered area on the right side with the balance a dark brown patina with scattered spots of silvered case colors. Lock plate and hammer retain dark case colors turning to plum patina. Trigger plate and buttplate are dark patina. Buttstock screw holes have been repaired, otherwise wood is sound with a couple gouges in the toe of the buttstock and a couple of bruises on the left side of the comb. Buttstock retains 75-80% orig finish. Forearm has a couple of small gouges with dark oil staining around the screw escutcheons and retains a smooth, hand-worn patina. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore with a few scattered spots of light pitting. 4-36911 JR267 (3,000-5,000)
