FINE AUBUSSON ALLEGORICAL TAPESTRY. 2nd half 18th century, France. Depicting a royal personage in blue holding a scepter in his right hand, seated in a fanciful chariot drawn by a pair of horses, the rider blowing S-shaped horn announcing the royal arrival, accompanied by military and secular attendants; the procession being viewed by children on a balcony of a chateau in the background. All within a deep blue border wrought with dense floral vinery and sprays, the corners woven with leafy sprays. The tapestry is accompanied by the description of cosmetic repairs and a letter from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y., N.Y. from the Supervising Curator of the Antonio Ratti Textile Center. SIZE: 9’3-1/2″ x 11’3″. CONDITION: With small professional restorations and applied with new linen liner and hanging rings. Very good overall with no brittle areas observed. 9-99278 (25,000-35,000)
