FINE BUFFALO HUNTERS CARTRIDGE BELT & KNIFE CASE WITH KNIVES & SHARPENING STEEL. SN NONE. Wonderful cartridge belt made of heavy steer hide saddle or harness leather about 52″ long including the tongue x 4″ wide with 38 sewn-on dbl loops for what appears to be 40 caliber Sharps cartridges. The entire belt has a deep border around edges and has two keepers along with a square buckle. Top edge of the belt has three riveted “D” rings, two of which contain a 2-pc leather shoulder strap with nickeled snaps and a small German silver roller buckle. Also contained in this lot is an orig buffalo hunter’s knife kit made from a leather covered block of wood, probably buffalo hide, about 9″ high x 3-3/8″ wide with a flat backside. The circumference of the kit is mounted with old brass tacks and the top is slotted for six knives with 14 old brass tacks in the top. The flat back side of the block has the seam for the leather covering which is secured with small iron brads and a couple of old brass tacks with spaces where two other brass tacks are missing. Block & leather covering have numerous small bug holes. The block contains five butchering & skinning knives of the period, all showing heavy, hard use. One of the Green River style skinning knives has the handle carved with the initials “FAB” on the left side and a symbol or brand on right side. The sharpening steel is 20″ overall with dark wood handle and pewter decoration with a steel swivel in the butt. CONDITION: Belt is clean & supple and usable. Cartridge loops have been re-sewn. Knife block leather covering is very dark and dry with crackled surface and some light cuts adjacent to the knife slots. Brass tacks are a very dark brass patina. Knives are intact but all show heavy wear. Steel also shows heavy wear. 4-40666 JR249 (1,000-2,000)
