EXTRA HEAVY SHARPS MODEL 1874 BUFFALO RIFLE. SN C52375. Cal. 45 2-7/8″. Standard rifle with 30-1/4″ heavy oct bbl, 1-1/4″ across the flats at the muzzle with replacement Rocky Mtn. front sight and reproduction Lawrence Patent style ladder rear sight with no provision for a tang sight. Top flat is marked “Old Reliable” in a panel and the Bridgeport address forward of the rear sight with the caliber marking over the chamber area. Bottom flat of the bbl, in addition to the SN, is marked “W.C.D.” with a small standing spread-winged eagle. SN was observed on top tang with the number “45727” on bottom flat of bbl under forearm. The stock, forearm, lockplate & trigger plate are unnumbered while the buttplate has the assembly number “58” inside the toe. It is mounted with uncheckered straight grain walnut with wide semi-schnable tip forearm without ears at the rear end. Stock has a straight grip with a filled sling swivel recess on bottom of stock and is mounted with a smooth military style buttplate. Trigger plate is mounted with Meacham style dbl set triggers. Rifle is probably a Meacham or one of his contemporarys’ conversion without the checkered wrist. Markings on the bbl are somewhat deeper than standard in a slightly different font indicative of the conversion bbl. Weight: 15 lbs. 5 oz. This was the favorite weight of the Great Plains buffalo hunter with many recorded instances of using a Sharps rifle in the 15-19 lb. weight range. The 45-100 cartridge was also a favorite of the American buffalo hunter. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Bbl retains a medium brown patina with scattered pitting, heavier on the right side and around the muzzle. Receiver retains case colors in the most sheltered areas being mostly a medium gray patina. Lockplate retains about 90% muted case colors and the hammer is silvered case colors. Trigger plate is a clean metal patina with fine pitting. Stock has one internal break in the wrist and a very old repair on right side of upper tang. The forearm has a professionally repaired crack and overall stock & forearm retain a professionally restored finish with light nicks & dings and a large gouge on left side of wrist.
