SCARCE SHARPS MEACHAM HEAVY CONVERSION RIFLE. SN C45332. Cal. 40 2-5/8″ (40-90 or 40-100). Beautiful conversion rifle with 30″ extra heavy bbl that measures 1-3/16″ across the flats at the muzzle. It has a Sharps Rocky Mountain front sight with German silver blade, Lawrence Patent rear sight with long staff and no provision for a tang sight. Top flat of bbl has the “Old Reliable” marking in a panel and the Bridgeport address forward of the rear sight and the caliber marking over the chamber area. Receiver is converted from a carbine configuration with the sling bar hole plugged. Mounted with slab sawed American walnut with uncheckered semi-schnable tipped forearm without ears and checkered straight stock with Sharps military style smooth steel buttplate. SN was observed on top tang, on bottom flat of bbl under forearm and inside bbl channel of the forearm. Buttstock has the number “99” on the heel under the buttplate. Lockplate, trigger plate & buttplate are unmarked. The following weight measurement includes a 2 lb. lead slug found in the buttstock in a hole under the buttplate, apparently to counter-balance the heavy bbl. Unfortunately the lead has begun to oxidize and has cracked the stock on each side, about 2-1/2″ on left side and 5″ on right side. This lead slug accompanies the rifle in case someone wishes to re-install it. Weight: 16 lbs. 1 oz. This was the favorite weight and one of the favorite calibers of the buffalo hunter with many recorded instances of the plains buffalo hunter using Sharps rifles in the 15-19 lb. range and especially in 40 caliber. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Bbl retains an overall very smooth blue/brown patina with sharp edge wear and crisp markings. Receiver retains most of it lightly to moderately faded case colors with one cleaned area in the front recess on left side. Top tang is mostly a blue/gray patina and the lever is silvered case colors. Lockplate retains most of its strong case with hammer a silver/brown patina. Trigger plate retains about 80% faded case colors and buttplate about 90% strong bright case colors. Stock has the aforementioned cracks from the lead slug and an internal crack not visible from the outside. Otherwise the wood is sound and retains most of its orig Meacham finish with light touch-up over the cracks in the buttstock. Crisp mechanics, brilliant shiny bore. 4-40128 JR217 (10,000-15,000)
