SHARPS MODEL 1874 SPORTING RIFLE. SN 156548. Cal. Appears to be 40-70 Sharps Bottleneck. Standard sporting rifle with 30″ oct bbl, Sharps front sight with German silver blade, Lawrence Patent ladder rear sight and a Sharps style vernier tang sight with 4″ staff by Axtell that has an “A” inside a shield on bottom side. Top flat of bbl has the Bridgeport address forward of the rear sight and the caliber marking over the chamber area. Mounted with very nicely figured, uncheckered American walnut with schnable tip rnd forearm and straight stock with checkered Sharps steel buttplate. The SN was observed on top tang in usual place and on bottom of the bbl with last four digits of SN on front face of stock, inside bbl channel of forearm, on the trigger plate and inside the toe of the buttplate. The lockplate does not have the SN, however it is marked with the “Y” inspector initial as is found on the trigger plate. According to Sharps Firearms, Sellers, only 3,881 of these rifles were built in the period Jan. 1871 to Sept. 1880. These rifles were very popular all across America and around the world and saw hard service, usually under adverse conditions with limited maintenance and are rarely found today with high orig finish. CONDITION: Fine, all matching as noted above except the tang sight, also noted above. Bbl retains about 90% strong orig blue with sharp edge wear and a few spots of discoloration. Receiver retains 60-70% faded case colors, strong on right side and lockplate around the hammer with left side and rear portion of lockplate faded to silver mixed with brown patina. Breech block retains most of its faded orig case colors and the lever traces of case colors, stronger in the most sheltered areas. Top tang has one extra hole. Wood is sound with normal handling & use marks, nicks & scratches and oil staining around the receiver & lockplate and on rear end of forearm and overall retains most of its orig factory varnish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore with some very light orange peel in front of chamber. 4-40126 (12,500-15,000)
