RECENCY MAHOGANY BRACKET CLOCK, WILLIAM STEPHENSON. Early 20th century, London, England. The case with domed and cavetto molded top fitted with a brass carrying handle, hinged at the front and back with glass panel doors each arched, the front door with brass-fillet. The case sides with fishscale sound frets on a molded base raised on brass OG bracket feet. The 7″ enameled sheet-iron dial with subsidiary STRIKE/SILENT DIAL above the Roman Numeral dial with time and strike apertures. The twin fusee five-pillar movement striking on bell with anchor escapement and pendulum lock, the shoulder backplate with engraved borders additionally engraved “Wm. Stephenson/ London” on the pendulum locking plate. This clock probably made by William Stephenson who is listed in Baillie, G.H. “Watchmakers & clockmakers of the world” is gaining his independence of the clockmakers company in 1794. SIZE: Case: 15″ h. Overall: 11″ w x 7-1/2″ d. CONDITION: Case retains original surfaces with usual and expected wear, the dial with abrasion and paint losses at I, IIII, VIII, and XI. Otherwise retaining original surfaces now with craquelure. The movement appears original and clean, probably in need of adjustment. Original brass pendulum.
