Beautiful Sharps rifle with 30″ med weight, oct to rnd bbl, wind gauge globe front sight with broken windage screw and a Lawrence Patent ladder rear sight, and a thick base tang sight that has a 5″ Vernier staff. Front and tang sights are not by Sharps and probably were added by the original purchaser. Trigger plate has Sharps double-set triggers. Top flat of bbl has the Hartford address forward of the rear sight and caliber marking over the chamber. Mounted with very nicely figured, uncheckered, straight grain American walnut with Sharps round forearm with pewter tip and straight stock with Sharps smooth steel buttplate. SN was observed on the top tang and bottom flat of the bbl under the forearm. Last five digits of SN are stamped inside the bbl channel of the forearm, on the front face of the butt stock and on the trigger plate. The lock plate is numbered “54504” and the buttplate “555000”. Accompanied by a Sharps letter which identifies this rifle as being listed in order book No.1 as a half-oct rifle which later was termed the Model 1874 sporting rifle. It was invoiced at Hartford on October 13, 1875 to Charles F. Pope, a gun and sporting goods dealer in Providence, RI. The rifle is described as being in 44 cal, case length not specified, with 30″ half-oct bbl, double triggers, open sights and oil finish stocks. It was shipped in the same order with four other rifles and 500 cartridges. CONDITION: Very fine. Serial numbers as noted above. Barrel retains about 98% strong, original factory blue with a few scattered fine spots of surface discoloration. Front sight windage screw broken as noted. Receiver retains 30-40% faded cased colors, mostly on the left side with the balance silvered case colors, turning to dark patina. Lock plate retains about 70% bright case colors around the hammer area with the tail turned silver to gray. Forearm has a hairline at the top right rear edge, otherwise wood is sound with very minor scattered nicks & scratches and retains virtually all of its bright, original factory finish. Hammer is missing the half cock notch, otherwise mechanics are crisp. Brilliant shiny bore. 4-40123 JR274 (12,500-17,500)
