ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The author of Bullard Arms (1988) and Bullard Firearms (2002) has shared with us that this is a very rare Bullard and his extensive research indicates that only approximately 1700 large frame Bullard repeaters were ever produced by Bullard. He also notes that the first Bullard ever assembled and test fired was in 1883 and Bullard went out of business in 1890. RARE BULLARD LARGE FRAME LEVER ACTION RIFLE. SN 210. Cal. Appears to be 45-70 Gov’t. Standard grade rifle with 28-1/4″ full oct bbl, full magazine, half-nickel front sight and a 1,200 yd ladder rear sight. Cal marking is on top of receiver ring with a Type 2 address on left side of receiver. Dust cover is an A-type with coarse serrations on the rear end edges. SN is stamped perpendicular to the frame behind the hammer slot. Mounted with uncheckered straight grain American walnut with straight grip and crescent steel buttplate. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms about 10-12,000 of these rifles were produced in the period 1886-1890 in a large variety of styles and cal. The unique rack & pinion levering action, later used by Browning in their BLR and a few others, is superior to the linked systems of other lever action rifles, being more positive and smooth. In spite of having a superior product, Bullard was unable to compete with Winchester & Marlin given their substantial head start in establishing markets & distribution systems. Also the fact that the early Bullards were introduced in the proprietary Bullard cartridges, instead of popular cals of the day, contributed to their demise. So only a few of these fine rifles survive today and are concentrated in a few collections around the country. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains 96-97% strong orig factory blue with faint sharp edge wear and a few scattered small spots of surface etching. Receiver has a cleaned area over the address, otherwise retains most of a strong orig factory blue with some light flaking on sides and bottom with candy striping on right side. Lever & hammer retain strong case colors in sheltered areas, bright on left side, faded to silver elsewhere. Top tang is a blue/brown patina. Buttplate retains about 90% orig blue. Wood is sound with a dark stain on left belly of the buttstock with light nicks & scratches and has been waxed. Mechanics are crisp & smooth, very bright shiny bore. 4-39900 JR317 (8,000-12,000)
