TWO CIVIL WAR ERA CANTEENS. Third quarter 19th century, American. First a tin example purported to have been painted by a captured Union soldier while in Libby Prison given to Charles O. Adams at the end of Civil War. Canteen painted with great seal of United States beneath starburst and above crossed flags; artist’s initials “J.A.H.” beneath flags, all on white ground. Card with above information affixed to back of canteen. Second example a pine and oak cheese box canteen. One side engraved with initials “CSA”. SIZE: 1) 6-1/4″ dia. 2) 7-7/8″ dia. PROVENANCE: From a coastal New Jersey home. CONDITION: First with worn painted surfaces with severe dent to bottom carrying bracket. Some paint loss. Second missing stopper and with good untouched weathered surfaces. 9-24237 (500-800)
