RARE ROPER REVOLVING SHOTGUN. SN 61. Cal. 12 ga. Very rare shotgun with 28-1/2″ Damascus bbl with orig interchangeable choke and bead front sight. It has a 4-shot rotary magazine with folding dust cover. Action is effected by cocking the hammer by means of a long operating rod/firing pin attached to the hammer nose which rotates the magazine to line a cartridge up with the chamber . When the shotgun is fired the operating rod pushes the cartridge into the chamber and fires it. Cocking the hammer again extracts the fired casing which is ejected out the top and rotates the cyl in preparation for the next shot. Mounted with nicely figured American walnut with uncheckered rnd forearm that has pewter tip and pewter fitting at the rear end. Butt stock has a straight grip with checkered wrist and a smooth steel buttplate. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms states that these shotguns were produced first in Amherst, MA from 1867 to 1868 and later, 1869-1876 in Hartford. This shotgun has the Amherst address. CONDITION: Fair to good. Bbl retains about 60% orig Damascus pattern with a large spot of heavy pitting on left side and a few other small scattered spots. Receiver & magazine housing retain smoky case colors in the most sheltered areas mostly turned to silver with the magazine housing mostly a dark attic brown patina with light surface rust. Stock has a break through the wrist, otherwise wood is sound showing heavy wear and retains a hand worn patina. Hand or hand spring is broken or missing as the rotary magazine does not turn when the hammer is cocked, otherwise mechanics are fine. Strong bore with light pitting. 4-40469 JR315 (2,500-3,500)
