PAIR OF RED PAINTED & DECORATED PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE FIRE BUCKETS. Circa 1839. Each bucket front decorated with a dramatic shielded eagle, having banners as following: the top in clasped beak, inscribed: “Mechanic Fire Society “ the lower grasped in talons inscribed: “William P. Gookin”, the shield centered with a pair of trade symbolic shears, verso inscribed “1811, No. 1 & No. 2” respectively. William P. Gookin (1813-1857), was admitted into the Mechanic Fire Society in September, 1839 as member #78, one of its Wardens in 1844, its Clerk from 1845 to 1847 and its President in 1854 as well as 1855. William P. Gookin, a draper, went into partnership with his father, Samuel Gookin in 1834. Listed in the 1839 Portsmouth, NH directory: “Gookin Samuel & Son (Wm. P.) drapers and tailors, 6 Water, corner of Court.” Their partnership was dissolved by mutual consent July 1, 1841. PROVENANCE: Recently discovered in a Massachusetts home of a Portsmouth, NH family descendant. CONDITION: Handles separated and detached, overall scattered craquelure, minor losses to red paint, mostly verso, with black paint losses to tops.
