ALBERT BIERSTADT (American, 1830-1902) “GUERRILLA WARFARE”. Oil on canvas landscape scene shows seven Union soldiers firing on a group of men next to house in valley. The soldiers hide behind a wood fence and bushes under a large tree. Signed with artist monogram lower right “AB”. Housed in a fine period gesso decorated gilt frame with new liner. “During the Civil War, Albert Bierstadt painted works other than landscapes. In October, 1862 Bierstadt received a five day pass to observe Union troops. For the next two years, Bierstadt painted several paintings of war scenes. In 1862 Bierstadt painted “Guerrilla Warfare” (Union Sharpshooters firing on Confederates)”. This painting appears to be a rendition of the finished copy which is listed in Hendricks. There are a few minor detailed differences which are evident. SIZE: 24-1/2″ x 30-1/2″. PROVENANCE: Red Baron, June 2004. A letter from Red Baron antiques to our consignor indicates that the painting was in the hands of Bob Bowers whose grandfather had bought it directly from the Estate of Albert Bierstadt while he was in New York City in the early years of the 20th Century. CONDITION: Very good. Restretched on new stretcher, possibly remounted on newer canvas. 9-94916 (30,000-50,000)
