BENJAMIN SWAN FEDERAL MAHOGANY AND BIRCH TALL CASE CLOCK. First quarter 19th century, Augusta, Maine. The bonnet with three brass ball and spire finials centering arched pierced fretwork above the conforming molded cornice. The hinged door opening to a gilt decorated enameled dial with Roman and Arabic numeral chapter rings centering a sweep seconds hand above an arched calendar aperture flanked by time and strike apertures. Above the inscription “Benj. Swan / Augusta“. All beneath a moon phase dial. The chapter rings within gilt decorated and painted spandrels of urns within scrolling leaf tips. With original brass 8 day movement. The waisted case with cross banded door and molded edges flanked by engaged quarter columns with brass capitals and bases joined to the concave molded box base raised on flared French feet. SIZE: 94-3/4″ h, 14″ throat w x 9-1/2” d. CONDITION: This example retains original surfaces, darkened with craquelure. Roughness and small losses to molding at base, proper left front foot repaired, losses to fretwork on bonnet. Moon phase dial with water damage, some rust and losses to painted surfaces. The dial overall has been overcleaned during the lifetime of the clock causing wear to some painted surfaces. Glass panel in door replaced. One finial with loss to spire.
