UNSIGNED (American, 19th Century) FOLK ART NEW ENGLAND SEAPORT VILLAGE. Fabulous oil on light board coastal scene shows a point of land with water on two sides having a yellow Colonial house with red roof and red barn. At the very point flies an American flag on tall flagpole. Another larger house can be seen with figures walking toward the water, all surrounded by white picket fences. Sixteen various boats and ships can be seen on a wavy ocean which is colored light to medium blue. The ships include a sidewheel steamship as well as a number of four-mast schooners and rowboats. Beyond the peninsula is another hidden point of land with a Colonial Village all under medium blue to light orange sky. Housed in its original folk art frame which is decorated with different colored beans in a zigzag motif. On the reverse is an old penned card that speculates on the age of the painting in relation to the stars on the flag which would indicate somewhere between 1822-1836. We cannot verify this. SIZE: 10-1/2″ x 13-1/4″. PROVENANCE: Found in a Wilton, Maine home. CONDITION: Very fine craquelure and slight bowing to board which does not detract from the painting at all. 9-99703 (10,000-15,000)
