FINE CIGAR STORE CARVED INDIAN PRINCESS. Probably late 19th or early 20th century. The princess carved in the round, brightly polychrome painted with a feathered headdress, long wavy hair, wearing a ceremonial necklace, and short-sleeved belted blue and red tunic with red and blue cape draped over left shoulder, fan-form leg ornaments and bracelets with cross-hatch decorations, blue and black moccasins. Posed looking to the left, with left arm across chest holding beads, right arm down by her side holding a green leaf with pink flowers. The whole mounted on a carved plinth. SIZE: 67″ overall h. PROVENANCE: Richard Paine Estate, Seal Cove, ME. CONDITION: Statue retains old surfaces, heavily overpainted. Possible losses and repairs to headdress. Multiple shrinkage and stress cracks throughout within acceptable limits. A fine example with very good features. 9-92541 (7,000-9,000)
