EXCEPTIONAL FIRST MODEL WINCHESTER 1894 RIFLE WITH EXTERNAL GUIDING BAR SCREWS. . SN 624. Cal .38-55 26″ rnd bbl with fixed nickel silver blade front sight and open rear sight. Bbl marking “MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO NEW HAVEN. CONN.U.S.A.” First type receiver with outside guiding bar screws, left guiding bar has inletted spring which bears against the breechbolt. Case colored hammer, trigger and lever crescent steel rifle butt plate. Stocked in straight grained American walnut. PROVENANCE: Accompanied by Cody Firearms Museum fact sheet identifying the rifle as: SN 624, 38/55, rnd bbl, plain trigger, shipped 12-12-1894. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl and magazine tube have 95% blue mixed with normal wear, spotting and light handling marks. Very good receiver blue with an area of patina along the upper edge of right side and spots of fine surface oxidization. Loading gate has 80% niter blue. Hammer retains 90% case colors, lever has very good case colors on sides turning to patina on the edges. Dark case colors visible on the trigger. Several of action screws have screwdriver distortion. Buttplate has a mottled silver gray patina. Stock has two hairline cracks extending from the left side of the receiver and another extending from the right side. The toe is repaired with a 1-1/2″ of replacement wood. Forend has one gouge in right side near forend cap. Both stock and forend have very good orig finish with normal handling marks.
