REMINGTON MODEL 1863 ZOUAVE RIFLE/MUSKET WITH BAYONET. Cal. 58. Fine rifle/musket with 33″ rifled rnd bbl, small blade front sight and 3-position 2-leaf rear sight. Lockplate has standard Remington markings with the date “1863” which date also is on the breech end of the bbl. Mounted in a 1-pc walnut stock with two visible cartouches on left side panel and mounted with brass furniture. It has a 2-pc patchbox on right side of buttstock containing a spare nipple and a cleaning worm. Bottom of forestock has a tulip head ramrod in the groove. Accompanied by an orig Zouave bayonet with 20″ Yataghan blade and brass handle with orig black leather scabbard that has brass throat & tip. PROVENANCE: From a coastal New Jersey home. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl retains about 90% dull orig blue with faded case colors on lockplate, stronger in sheltered areas. Stock has a gouge and a few chips around ramrod channel, otherwise wood is sound with light handling & use marks and retains a hand worn patina. Mechanics are crisp, very bright shiny bore. Bayonet has bright shiny blade with dark mustard patina on the brass. Leather scabbard has lightly crackled surface and retains about 85% orig black finish. 9-24221 (3,000-5,000)
