JAMES GARDNER BABBIDGE (American, 1844-1919) PORTRAIT OF THE HANNAH MCLOON. Oil on canvas scene shows the three-mast black hulled barkentine sailing left to right into Rockland Harbor. Owls Head lighthouse is seen off the stern and the name can be seen at stern. The middle mast flying ship pennant and American flag off back mast. Seven figures on deck in colorful clothes and the ship is seen in full sail. Five smaller boats are seen with low land mass off bow. The just setting sun throws light on a colorful sky. Signed lower left “J G Babbidge” and dated illegibly. Housed in its original gesso decorated gilt frame with gilt liner. Babbidge was born in Rockland, Maine and after duty in the Navy he resided on the coast of Maine where he first opened his studio in 1875. REFERENCE: Smithsonian Institutes Inventory No. IAP88720114.
