RARE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1847 SAPPERS & MINERS MUSKETOON WITH BAYONET. Cal. 69. Rare Sappers & Miners Musketoon with 26″ round bbl, iron mounted with split front band that has a brass sight blade and bayonet stud on the right side of the rear strap. There is a bayonet lug on right side of the bbl at the muzzle. Middle band has an integral sling wire with corresponding wire in buttstock. Both lockplate & breech plug tang are dated “1847”. Mounted in a 1-pc walnut stock with visible cartouche on left side flat and has a trumpet-shaped ramrod in channel below bbl. Accompanied by an extremely rare Ames bayonet made specifically and only for this model. Bayonet has a 22″ hourglass shaped, dbl edged blade with fish scale brass handle that has an integral bbl loop on one side of handguard and a stud slot in the pommel. Ricasso is marked with the Ames name & address on one side with “U.S. / 1855” on the other side. Only 250 of these rare musketoons were produced in 1847-1848 and marked with those dates. There were a total of 580 more produced in 1855-1856 and so dated. PROVENANCE: From a coastal New Jersey home. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Metal retains a bright cleaned patina with some minor surface discoloration; stock has a hairline back of lockplate, otherwise wood is sound with a lightly cleaned patina. Mechanics are fine, moderately pitted bore. Bayonet has scattered spots of surface discoloration, is unsharpened with full blade, handle shows light wear with dark mustard patina. 9-24231 (3,000-5,000)
