J.P. SWEETSER (American, 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF THE SHIP “W.H. CONNER”. Large oil on canvas portrait of a black hulled three-mast ship flying American flag. The center mast has a blue flag with white cross with red “P”. Ship is seen sailing left to right with seven figures on deck. The ship’s name can be seen on the bow and stern. Off the bow are several smaller boats near a peninsula with white buildings and two lighthouses, possibly off Plymouth, Massachusetts. Birds and a steamer are off the stern. Colorful cloud and blue sky. Signed lower left clearly “J.P. Sweetser 1879”. Little is known about this artist other than he did work in Maine and some reference books have misspelled his last name by adding a “t” after the second “s”. Housed in its original deep molded wood gilt frame. SIZE: 28″ x 45″. PROVENANCE: Richard Paine Estate, Seal Cove, Maine. CONDITION: Very good. 9-92389 (4,000-8,000)
