UNUSUAL FOLK ART WATERCOLOR PORTRAIT OF A CHILD WITH CAT. This fine and unique full length portrait depicting a young child with straight brown hair, blue-gray eyes and pronounced chin wearing a beaded necklace. Child is standing holding a key on a ring (there is an additional object hanging from the key ring that has the same coloration as the dress) with a flower in the other hand (note positioning of the fingers on the left hand, they are positioned identically to those on the right hand) wearing a yellow puffy sleeve dress over a pair of matching pants. In the foreground is a striped cat playing with a mouse. The eyes of the subject seem to be staring directly at the viewer; no notice being taken of the cat and mouse in the foreground. The whole on a mottled ground within a zigzag border. Mounted within a lemon gold frame of the period. SIZE: Sight: 22″ x 17″. PROVENANCE: The watercolor was discovered in a home in Exeter, New Hampshire several years ago. CONDITION: Some foxing and staining to paper of a minor nature to the proper right of the subject’s right eye and in the proper lower left corner of the background. Tear in proper left upper corner of paper. Frame has discoloration and wear with losses to gilding. 9-20442 (1,500-2,500)
