ATTRIBUTED TO DUNCAN MCFARLANE (English, 1834-1871) PORTRAIT OF THE SHIP “GENERAL DUNLAP”. Fine watercolor showing a broadside view of the three-mast black and white hulled ship. Sails are up and it sails left to right into what may be La Havre or Liverpool harbor. The ship flies the American flag, ship pennant and the name is emblazoned on the bow and stern. Eleven figures on deck and a busy harbor scene with people, boats and buildings in the background. An interesting part of this watercolor is on the left side, the General Dunlap is entering the harbor in front view. On the right side a tug is alongside the Dunlap with a back view. In the foreground is a seagull flying toward a piece of driftwood, a trademark feature of McFarlane’s work. Green sea with white caps under a blue and cloud sky. Housed in a fine antique rosewood veneered frame with glass. SIZE: 19-1/2″ x 28″. PROVENANCE: Richard Paine Estate, Seal Cove, Maine. CONDITION: Watercolor has been laid onto a wood panel, there are foxing lines, minor scrapes along the edges and some fading. Otherwise good. 9-92442 (2,000-4,000)
