CARVED STERNBOARD FROM THE SCHOONER “PERCY CANN”. Circa 1900. A gilt-decorated, painted, and carved sternboard depicting a displayed eagle gripping a standard, a banner flowing from its beak carved with the ship’s name “Percy Cann”. The crescent-shaped board with carved scrolled volutes and central guilloche, the whole decorated with dark indigo paint. NOTE: The steam-powered schooner “Percy Cann” was wrecked on December 11, 1905 at “Madame” Island, Nova Scotia, and declared a partial loss. According to insurance records, the wreck was partially salvaged. SIZE: 77″ l x 38″ h. PROVENANCE: Richard Paine Estate, Seal Cove, Maine. CONDITION: Retains original gilt and painted surfaces, with two straight horizontal seam splits. All carving in distinct detail, one professional repair noted: replaced and re-carved proper right wing above head (size of repair 15″ x 3-1/2″). 9-92535 (20,000-30,000)
