PERCY SANBORN (American, 1849-1929) PORTRAIT OF THE THREE-MAST SHIP “IVANHOE”. Outstanding oil on canvas moonlit scene shows the black hulled ship in full sail sailing right to left. Signal flags and the American flag off stern. The captain is seen looking through spyglass and several men are seen on deck. Green wavy ocean with one similar type ship off bow. The full moon is seen in opening in scattered clouds reflecting off the water. On the bottom edge of the canvas on front is written “Ship Ivanhoe, Capt. E. H. Herriman. Built at Belfast, ME 1884”. Signed bottom right “Percy Sanborn”. Housed in its original gilt oak frame. SIZE: 22” x 32”. PROVENANCE: Richard Paine Estate, Seal Cove, Maine.
