ANNIE BEILER (American, 20th Century) THREE AMISH PAINTING REMEMBRANCES. These three watercolor/gouache paintings created by Annie Beiler, age 12, in the late 1930’s. She was one of 12 siblings who lived in an Amish Community and she was removed and brought to live in Topeka, Indiana. These three works were her remembrances of her young Amish life. All identically housed in black modern frames with green backing board. 1) “Going to School” shows a white schoolhouse atop a knoll with open door showing silhouetted teacher and desk with red apple. Outside is parked an Amish wagon with horse. A coal pile with coal hod and well are seen in grassy yard and three groups of children and parents walk up the road towards the school. It has started to rain with one parent holding an umbrella and one of the boys splashing in a puddle. A yellow lightning bolt splits the blue sky near three large trees, one harboring a red bird. 2) “House Cleaning” shows part of a pink roofed, gray house with various chores being done. The chimney is being cleaned, a rug is being beaten out the window, a woman cleans the windows and a young boy paints the porch. The gutter has sagged and from the low point water drips beside the door. Dirt surrounds the doorway and needs to be cleaned. A large apple tree with apples is on left side holding the clothesline which holds the Amish quilt for drying. 3) Untitled barn raising scene having 11 figures on various beams of the structure under a blue and white cloud sky. These are wonderful folk art encapsulations of childhood memories in the Amish Community. The information concerning the history is provided to us from the consignor. SIZE: 30″ x 40-1/2″. CONDITION: Very good. 9-20352 (8,000-12,000)
