CLARKE BATTLE FITZ-GERALD (American, 1917-2004) “EYE OF THE NEEDLE”. Outstanding wood sculpture formed by a single cut from an elm tree, found in Castine, Maine with a cavity at the center. The face chip carved with nice patina, the interior painted white. Mounted on a steel plate. Signed on metal plate “FG”. NOTE: A letter accompanies the lot which was written to the previous owners by the artist. It discusses the “female-ness” of the subject matter and his thoughts surrounding his interpretation. Also accompanying the lot is a number of exhibitions, newspaper articles & pamphlets regarding the artist, some showing this sculpture in place at the Payson Gallery. SIZE: TOTAL: 33-1/2″ h x 34″ w.
