RARE AND IMPORTANT DIMINUTIVE FEDERAL MAHOGANY SETTEE ATTRIBUTED TO SLOVER & TAYLOR. Early 19th century, New York City, NY. This finely carved double chairback settee with tablet crests carved with demilune flowerheads within molded crestrail above cylindrical reeded slats headed by reeded fans, joined to molded serpentine arms, carved with leaftips, continuing to floral carved grips, raised on incurved supports centering a rectangular and shaped overupholstered seat, raised on square tapered reeded frontal legs terminating in brass capped casters, the rear legs backswept. Chairs with similar characteristics are pictured in American Furniture, The Federal Period by Montgomery, pages 61 & 62. Also American Furniture, 1620 to Present by Fairbanks and Bates, page 213. SIZE: 35″ h x 42-1/4″ w overall, 17″ h of seat. CONDITION: With early polished surfaces and good patina. An old professional repair proper right arm support beneath hand grip.
