RARE WINCHESTER DELUXE MODEL 1886 EXPRESS LEVER ACTION RIFLE. SN 48399. Cal. 50EX, 26″ octagon to round bbl, half magazine, half-nickel front sight with set screw, flat top V-notch sporting rear. Top flat of bbl is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE / WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.” Adjacent receiver “50EX”. Standard receiver with tang mounted peep sight. Mounted with “XX” walnut, checkered pistol grip with ebony insert, smooth steel shotgun buttplate, H style checkered forend with nose cap. Accompanied with Cody Firearm Museum Winchester letter identifying as rifle, 50-110, half octagon, plain trigger, checkered stock, pistol grip, oil finish, half magazine, shotgun butt. Received in warehouse October 9, 1890. Shipped October 10, 1890. Inspection of lower tang reveal assembly number 213XXSO. The 213 can be found in top tang channel of stock and inside toe of buttplate. An interesting note – when removing buttplate, revealed drilled hole filled with about 2 dozen very old wood stick matches. PROVENANCE: Bruce M. Cady Collection. CONDITION: Very Good. Bbl retains 80% orig blue that is toning with brown patina, minor muzzle wear, some thinning and blending with silver patina in round portion, bright on sharp edges of octagon and normal nicks, dings & small scratches. Receiver has some faint color visible in protected areas but is mostly silver hardened blending with brown patina. Hammer and lever are mostly silver-brown patina. Stock is sound with moderately worn checkering, hairline crack right side of top tang, normal minor nicks & dings and retains orig oil finish blended with hand-worn patina. There is a small 1/4″ spot just behind pistol grip that has been filled with plastic wood. Forearm is sound with moderately worn checkering, normal nicks & dings and retains orig oil finish blended with hand-worn patina. Nose cap has faded to silver and blended with brown patina. Mechanics are crisp, shiny bore with some minor scattered shallow pits. 4-36918 BDT179 (8,000-15,000)
