IMPORTANT 18th CENTURY AMERICAN “HELL HORSE” POWDER HORN. Nice example engraved with name of maker “William Steel Peekskill August y 1777” decorated overall with arrangement of three long houses centering a rectangle within which is “No 2 Bs”, to the right of which is scrimmed a large winged dragon with curling pointed tail. Reverse decorated with plants. Fitted to wooden spout and plugged with planed wood cap. NOTE: In March of ’77 Peekskill was the scene of a battle which was waged between Colonel Marinus Willett against ten British ships which had disembarked 500 British soldiers who burned the American Barracks and some military supplies. Outnumbered, Willett attacked and the British force fell back to their boats & withdrew. We believe this horn depicts the barracks at Peekskill and is a wonderful example. SIZE: 13″ l overall. PROVENANCE: From a coastal Connecticut home. CONDITION: At base of horn missing 1/2″ square area, spout with old chip at end. Otherwise very good with good patina. 9-23912 (1,500-2,500)
