FRAMED ETCHING “THE REPEAL, OR THE FUNERAL PROCESSION OF MISS AMERIC-STAMP”. A rare engraving celebrating the repeal of the Stamp Act with its pro-trade and pro-American message with the last statement “These numbers will ever be held in esteem by the true Sons of Liberty”. The black & white illustration shows a group of men in a funeral procession on the banks of the Thames River with warehouses & ships in the background. At the head of the procession Dr. W. Scott stands at the open doors to the tomb while holding the text to his sermon while a dog relieves himself on his feet. Two men holding flags are behind him with George Grenville carrying a child-size coffin and five other men behind. Two Bishops bring up the rear. The etcher, Benjamin Wilson (1721-1788) was a London portrait artist and friend of Benjamin Franklin. The image having below a title and multi-paragraph description. At a later date someone has pencil and penned a description regarding the people in the etching. Housed in a modern silver frame with glass. Circa last quarter of the 18th Century. SIZE: Sight: 11-1/2″ x 15-1/2″. CONDITION: Not examined out of frame. The imprint plate mark fully visible with 1″ margins at sides and bottom; 1/4″ at the top. Losses to left & right bottom corner (in margin) and top edge (margin). No other faults noted. 9-23779 (1,500-2,500)
