WILLIAM PITT STAMP ACT REPEALED DISPATCH BOX. The small dome top box having a small iron bale handle on top and iron hasp with lock. It is covered on all sides with leather which probably was dyed a bright red originally. On the top of the lid at the center is gold embossed crown below it “W P” (for William Pitt) and the inscription “Stamp Act Repd” (repealed) “March 18 1766”. To either side are embossed orbs (the seal of the city of London) with the initials “B T”. In the four corners are identical designs reminiscent of four interlocking gears which may resemble sunbursts. The outer border with a continuous floral design. The interior is lined with 18th Century imprints of maps, an engraving entitled “America”, and a page titled “An Accurate Description of America”. These boxes, along with a number of other types of items were made to commemorate the event. SIZE: 7″ h x 17″ l x 9-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: From a coastal New Jersey home. CONDITION: All original, the leather has cracked and there are scattered areas of loss on the sides, the lid virtually intact. Rawhide & eyelets have been added to hold the lid open. 9-24260 (4,000-6,000)
