LOUIS DODD (British, 1843-2006) “THE 44 GUN FRIGATE ‘PRESIDENT’ LEAVING BOSTON HARBOUR 30 APRIL, 1813”. This outstanding oil on wood panel depicts the three-mast gunship with half sails up sailing left to right leaving a large harbor with other boats and the Boston skyline as backdrop. The ship is flying the American flag and has a double deck of cannons. Outstanding details are throughout this painting and historically an accurate depiction of the time. Signed lower right and having a title legend painted on the burl flat section of the bottom center of the frame. Housed in an outstanding gilt and burl wood frame. Four of his works can be found in the boardroom of Federal Express and two in General Motors. He was sold and represented by the finest Marine Art Galleries in the country. Accompanying the painting is a book illustrated by Louis Dodd titled The Confederate Raiders by Thomas Coughlin.
