SCARCE WINCHESTER MODEL 1876 DELUXE EXPRESS LEVER ACTION RIFLE WITH BRITISH PROOF MARKS. SN 32693. Cal. 50EX (50-95), 22″ rnd bbl, half magazine, slightly modified half nickel front sight, checkered side V-notch sporting rear. Top of bbl is marked “WINCHESTER’S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING’S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860.” Left side below rear sight is a series of 4 British Proof Marks, right side has a shield-shaped proof mark and “130”. Adjacent receiver on top “50/CAL”. Left side of receiver ring has crown V proof. Standard receiver with dust cover marked “WINCHESTER EXPRESS / 50 CAL 95 GRS”. Bottom of lifter is marked “50-95”. Mounted with “XX” walnut, checkered pistol grip with ebony fleur-de-lis insert in grip cap, smooth steel shotgun butt, H-checkered forend and nose cap with 3rd screw on bottom. Inspection of lower tang reveals assembly number “XX440S”. Top tang channel of stock has matching “440” number and inside toe of buttplate carries the number “26”. Accompanying gun is Cody Firearms Museum fact sheet identifying as Express rifle with 22″ rnd bbl, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, half magazine, shotgun butt, case hardened. Other remarks: inside finish. Received in warehouse 3-19-1883. Shipped 3-20-1883 on order “2490”. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection CONDITION: Extremely Fine. Bbl retains 85-90% thinning orig blue with minor muzzle wear, numerous tiny nicks, dings & scratches, thinning forward of mag tube and blending with silver and brown patina. Receiver retains 90-95% dark orig case colors with some minor nicks & scratches, thinning across bottom and blending with silver patina. Dust cover retains orig blue that is toning a purple patina. Hammer shows most of its fading, orig case colors. Lever has strong, dark orig colors on sides blending with silver patina across bottom. Inside lever loop neatly marked in small white numbers “74-24-237”. Stock is sound with slightly worn checkering and a few flattened points, numerous minor nicks, dings & scratches, retaining its orig piano varnish blending with hand-worn patina in grip. About an 1″ behind grip cap there is a stamp “93/237″ and about 1” from buttplate perpendicular to toe line there is a small stamp “50”. Forend is sound with moderately worn checkering with some flattened points, numerous nicks, dings & bruises retaining a hand-worn patina blended with some orig piano varnish. Mechanics are crisp with very nice bore with some slight frosting in grooves. 4-36885 BDT228 (25,000-35,000)
