SCARCE WINCHESTER 1873 TRAPPER SRC WITH SCABBARD. SN 111853. Cal. 44-40, 15″ rnd bbl, half-magazine, barley corn front sight, gunsmith-made fixed blade V-notch rear sight. Top of bbl is marked “WINCHESTER’S-REPEATING-ARMS NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING’S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860”. Third Model receiver with staple and ring on left side. Mounted with straight grain walnut, uncheckered straight grip, steel carbine buttplate with trap door. 7-7/8″ forend with single band. Found under trap door in buttplate a Buffalo Bill Historical Center letter dated February 17, 1978 to Mr. J.M. Taylor identifying gun as a 15″ carbine, 1/2 magazine. Received in warehouse January 12, 1883 and shipped same day along with another identical gun to same order number. Signed “Richard Rattenbury, Assistant Curator”. Also with gun is a current Cody Firearms Museum fact sheet with same information. Gun is accompanied with a supple, hand-tooled leather scabbard with no visible markings. An ATF-NFA exemption letter also accompanies the lot. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection CONDITION: Good to Very Good. Metal surfaces retain a dark brown patina with some minor nicks & scratches, some areas of fine surface oxidation, faint ring mark on left side. Lower tang is missing stock screw. Stock is sound with some nicks, dings, dents & worn areas, grain crack in comb from tang of buttplate and a couple other along edge of buttplate. Rear left side stock has a period carved “H”. Finish is a hand-worn dark oil. Forend is sound with nicks, dings & dents, small chip at front edge and retains a hand-worn dark oil finish. Mechanics are good, dark bore with considerable shallow pitting. Scabbard is sound with considerable surface cracking. 4-36884 BDT245 (4,000-8,000)
