RARE INTAGLIO CARVED WHALE’S TOOTH ON STAND. Circa 1860, England. This fine example depicting a sailor with Jack Tar hat and sailor’s uniform standing with a union jack in left and an anchor to his right on a supposed gunwhal. The tooth mounted on a three-tiered stepped pedestal base inlaid with baleen diamonds and rectangular panels and baleen spots. The whole raised on carved and turned bone ball feet. SIZE: Tooth: 6″ l. Overall: 7-1/2″ h. PROVENANCE: From a private Utah collection. CONDITION: Very good with untouched polished surfaces, and with mellow patina. 9-90387 (4,000-6,000)
