SPECIAL ORDER WINCHESTER 1873 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. SN 31211. Cal. 44-40, 28″ oct bbl, full magazine, modified to small post half nickel front sight, checkered side sporting rear. Top flat of bbl is marked “WINCHESTERS-REPEATING ARMS, NEW HAVEN. CT. / KINGS-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866 OCTOBER 16. 1860”. Second model receiver with screw-on rail and checkered thumbprint dust cover and single set trigger. Mounted with straight grain walnut, uncheckered straight grip, crescent steel buttplate with trapdoor. Standard forend with nose cap. Inspection of lower tang reveals assembly number “151”. No numbers found in tang channel of stock but matching “151” on inside toe of buttplate. Accompanying rifle is Cody Firearm Museum Winchester letter identifying as rifle oct bbl, 28″ set trigger, stock 1″ longer, received in warehouse on August 28, 1878, shipped from warehouse same day on order number 12787. Stock measures 13 3/4″ CONDITION: Very good. Bbl and mag tube retain a silver mixed with brown patina finish. There are traces of blue in the most protected areas, normal nicks & dings. Receiver has similar silver and brown patina mixed, again with some traces of blue showing in most protected areas. Loading gate screw on right plate has been replaced with a peened rivet and has been there a long time. Stock is sound with numerous shallow nicks, dings & gouges and retains an old coat of added finish blending with hand-worn patina. Forend is sound with normal nicks, dings & shallow gouges, small crack on right side at nose cap and retains an open grain hand-worn patina. Mechanics are good, set trigger works but will only release hammer to half-cocked, fully functional when pulled from standard position and adjustment screw is broken off flush. Decent bore with distinct rifling, grooves with scattered, shallow pitting. 4-36388 BDT53 (3,000-4,000)
