IMPORTANT HAWAIIAN KOA DEEP BOWL. A fine and rare Hawaiian bowl fashioned from koa wood, of hollowed circular form, and tapering to the rim. The bowl exhibits a number of old indigenous repairs including a panel secured with old dowels and hardwood “stitching” around the border. The side with two butterfly repairs securing an old shrinkage crack; fine aged patina on the interior and warm reddish brown on the exterior. NOTE: A similar example, part of the Captain James Cook collection, sold in the rooms at Sotheby’s, New York, on November 16th, 2001, lot 248. In addition, a similar royal Hawaiian bowl was appraised on The Antiques Roadshow, August 21st, 2004. SIZE: 8-3/4″h x 12″ dia. PROVENANCE: Purportedly acquired by the consignor’s father, a member of the Hathaway-Howland Family with extensive land and business interests in Honolulu and Hilo in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Included is the Walker & Howland Civil Engineering firm of whom J.H. Howland was a principal (circa 1899). The bowl is acquired from a sale of several items belonging to Queen Lili ‘uokalani (1838-1917). The current owner and consignor, a direct descendant within the family, remembers this bowl and others in her family home, then located on Waikiki Beach. CONDITION: As stated. 9-24563 (5,000-15,000)
