FINE PAIR OF NEW ENGLAND FIRE BUCKETS. Circa 1812, probably Massachusetts. This paint decorated pair of “No 1” and “No 2” buckets belonging to the Varrell Family and dated “1812” beneath a scrolling banner terminating in leaf tips and decorated with a 5-pointed star joined with two tassels. Decorated with brick red rim and base, the yellow banner and scrolls with red trim. The star in shades of blue. All on a black ground. Note the hand tied loops on the leather handles. SIZE: Bucket 12-1/4″ h. Overall 19-1/2″ h. CONDITION: The painted surfaces early, if not original. The No 1 bucket with losses within pennant between “a” and “r” and in the area of “l” at end of name. Also paint losses in scrolling leaf tips. The No 2 bucket overall very good, with one leather handle broken away from the fire bucket. 9-20348 (8,000-12,000)
