ATTRIBUTED TO ROBERT SALMON (American, 1775-aft. 1845) SALVAGING THE WRECK. Small unsigned oil on wood panel scene shows a large sailing vessel wrecked in shallow water with figures atop and beside. A group of people, one on horseback, watches from the beach side and a mother & child can be seen atop a fenced cliff. Housed in a gilt wood frame with velvet liner. NOTE: From the “Catalogue of Robert Salmon’s Pictures 1828-1840” there are three works which may reference the above painting. Of similar size and dating from the mid-1830’s, the views all describe scenes with wrecks and figures (#840 and #842). Catalog #864 is however more specific: “8 x 5-1/2″ 1 Day Calm with a wreck, rocks and figuars (sic) man on horseback”. SIZE: 5-3/4″ x 8-1/4″. Overall: 10-3/4″ x 13″. PROVENANCE: The personal property of award winning American actress, singer, and best-selling author, Polly Bergen. CONDITION: Craquelure, in need of restoration. 7-70173-1 (3,000-5,000)
